On the second weekend in October, The United Methodist Church recognizes Children’s, Sabbath, a time to reflect on God’s gift of children, and ways congregations and individuals can renew their commitment to care for, protect and advocate for all children.  The Children’s Defense Fund has led and organized The National Observance of Children’s Sabbath since 1991.  This ecumenical celebration brings together people of all faiths to address the needs of children.

Scripture Lesson                                       Mark 10: 17-31                                                                  Collin Baldwin

                                                                    New International Version

17 As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. “Good teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 18 “Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good—except God alone. 19 You know the commandments: ‘You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, you shall not defraud, honor your father and mother.’” 20 “Teacher,” he declared, “all these I have kept since I was a boy.” 21 Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” 22 At this the man’s face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth. 23 Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!” 24 The disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said again, “Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.” 26 The disciples were even more amazed, and said to each other, “Who then can be saved?” 27 Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.” 28 Then Peter spoke up, “We have left everything to follow you!” 29 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus replied, “no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel 30 will fail to receive a hundred times as much in this present age: homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields—along with persecutions—and in the age to come eternal life. 31 But many who are first will be last, and the last first.”

Fall Bible Study plans are taking shape. We will read and discuss the book God Unbound by Dr. Elaine Heath. This is a very helpful book about how to be the church in times of change. This study will be offered at two different times, so hopefully we will have great participation. Everyone is welcome--that's family, friends, neighbors, co-workers and anyone else who might be interested!

~A day time study will be held on Tuesday afternoons from 1:00-2:30 pm in the Fellowship Hall. Here are the dates: October 26, November 9,16, 23, 30, December 7 and 14. Sue Kiryluk and Dianne Leya will co-lead this study. If you are interested, please contact Sue at 919-612-8176 or Dianne at 919-524-7575.

~An evening study will be held on Thursdays from 6:30-8 pm in the Fellowship Hall. Here are the dates: November 4, 11, 18 and December 2, 9 and 16. Terry Matias and Pastor Liz will co-lead this study. Please contact the church office at 919-269-9408 if you are interested.

Note: The study books have been ordered. You will be updated when they are available and how much each book will cost.

Please remember to like and share the ZUMC Facebook page so that our services (Thursday and Sunday) and events will be shared with all of your family, friends, community and beyond. Let’s spread the word of God while we are thriving here at ZUMC!

We want to share those next week with the church.  We look forward to hearing from you!

Barbara Brown Taylor, one of America’s best-known interpreters of religion, will be speaking at East Carolina University on October 26 at 7:00 PM. TIME magazine listed her as one of the 100 most influential people in the world. She will speak on the topic of her best-selling book, "Holy Envy: Finding God in the Faith of Others." She is also the author of "Leaving Church: A Memoir of Faith.” If you are interested in attending this lecture, please contact Sue Kiryluk by phone or text (919-612-8176) by October 18 to plan carpooling.

November 7th -  We will celebrate All Saints Sunday. We would like to remember all the departed saints in our lives and community from the last year with a photo display. If your loved one has passed away since last All Saints Day, please send us a picture of the person or drop one by the church office by Sunday, October 10. We will use these photos to make a display for our Narthex and to use in our All Saints Service. We will return these photos to you after All Saints Sunday. Thank you for helping us to honor these most special people in our church and community life!

November 21st - Youth Sunday - Our Youth will lead an exciting worship service! Can’t wait!

Thank you to all who have turned in their 2022 Pledge Cards!  If you have not done so yet, please prayerfully complete your 2022 Pledge Card and place it in the offering box in the Wesley Room or drop it by the church office. Extra Pledge Cards are available on the table in the Narthex.  We would like all cards turned in to the Church by today.  This will be most helpful to the Finance Committee as they plan for an exciting and bright future.  We appreciate your faithful support of ZUMC’s outstanding ministries. God is with us!

Very Important Announcement: Our Charge Conference will be held by Zoom again this year and is planned for Tuesday, November 2, at 6:00 pm. O God, Our Help in Ages Past by Watts/Croft/harm. Monk

O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come,

our shelter from the stormy blast, and our eternal home!

Before the hills in order stood, or earth received her frame,

from everlasting, thou art God, to endless years the same.

Seek Ye First by Karen Lafferty

Seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness,

and all these things shall be added unto you. Allelu, Alleluia!

Ask, and it shall be given unto you; seek and ye shall find;

knock, and the door shall be opened unto you. Allelu, Alleluia!
