Gathering

Gathering Quote                    “I call you by name and you are mine. From all eternity I have loved you and                                          Pat Tarbell

to eternity I shall love you. Your mind cannot comprehend this, but your heart can respond to it.”
Hal M. Helms

Call to Worship                                                                                                                                                                                Pat Tarbell

Leader: In the beginning when God created

People: A wind swept over the waters, a breath warmed the dark voids, a Spirit called forth creation.

Leader: God gave in grace:

People: Let there be light for all to see, let there be water for all to splash in, let there be life in the midst of death. Yes, let there be life beyond death.

Leader: And God invited and invites us to respond, rejoicing!

People: It was good. It was awesome and awe-filled.

Leader: It is good.

Opening Prayer (unison):                                                                                                                                                                       Pat Tarbell

Living God, when the Spirit descended on Jesus at his baptism in Jordan's

water you revealed him as your own beloved Son. You anointed him with the

Holy Spirit. Grant that all who are baptized into his name may keep the covenant

they have made, and boldly confess Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior now and

forever. Amen.

*Hymn of Praise                                          Praise to the Lord, the Almighty                                                                       ZUMC Choir

United Methodist Hymnal 139

Proclaiming the Word

Prayer for Illumination(unison): Pat Tarbell

O Everlasting Love, what joy to be in your presence.

How wonderful to know that you created us.

How we marvel that you have made us your own.

Keep us mindful of your faithfulness.

Enfold us in your enduring love forever. Amen.

Psalm Prayer (Ps. 100)

Scripture Lesson                                              Luke 3:15-17, 21-22                                              Pat Tarbell

                                                                                  New Revised Standard Version

15 As the people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Messiah, 16 John answered all of them by saying, "I baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 17 His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire."

21 Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heaven was opened, 22 and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, "You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased."

Pastoral Prayer and The Lord’s Prayer                                                                                                                                                  Pastor Liz

Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name.

Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and

The power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

~by placing your offering in the mail slot on the back door of the church office.

~by giving online at www.zumchurch.org with our online giving option.

~by giving in person at our Sunday 10 AM Services! An offering box is available in the Wesley Fellowship Room outside the Sanctuary before and after the service.

Opportunities to Grow:

Here's a very helpful opportunity from the North Carolina Conference Center for Leadership Excellence:

Annual Conference-Wide Leadership Training

Today, Sunday, January 9, 3-4:30pm

This training equips Lay Leaders and those who serve on Finance, Trustees, and Staff-Parish Relations Committees. The training is designed for all committee members and not simply committee chairs.

All four workshops will be held concurrently as Zoom meetings, and each will be recorded in case anyone misses it or needs to view more than one.

For more details and to register, check out this link:

https://nccumc.org/leadership/event/conference-wide-leadership-training/

Announcements:  January 23 - Heritage District Superintendent Ismael Ruiz-Millan will be preaching at ZUMC. Please join us! We also plan to bury the ZUMC Time Capsule after the service. We look forward to this very special day and hope you do, too! Note: If you have anything you would like included in the Time Capsule, please contact Linda Chamblee, Sonya Boykin, Bryan Baldwin or Pastor Liz.(the ZUMC Time Capsule Team)

January 30 - 11 am to 1:00 pm – ZUMC Church Council Mini-Retreat after the service in the Fellowship Hall. Everyone is encouraged to attend and to get excited about ZUMC! All new and returning members of the Church Council are encouraged to attend as well. We will do some visioning, brainstorming, dreaming, praying, planning, and advancing in our mission to make disciples for Jesus Christ through ZUMC. You will also get to meet your team and learn more about your role. A light lunch will be included.

NEW BIBLE STUDY: Have you ever wondered about John Wesley and the roots of Methodism? Adam Hamilton’s book Revival takes us on an interesting journey through Wesley’s life, ministry, and teachings. Each week includes a short video and discussion time. This would be great for those who did not “grow up” in the United Methodist Church or as a refresher for those who did. We will meet in person in the Fellowship Hall. All are invited! Time and dates are Tuesdays 1:00 to 2:30 on January 18, 25, February 8, 15, 22. Call church office (919-269-9408), Dianna Leya (919-524-7575) or Sue Kiryluk (919-612-8176) if you are interested so books can be ordered at the cost of $12.00 (8 copies are available in the church office). The conference media center has a limited number of participants books available to borrow if you would rather not purchase one.

ZUMC Preschool Advisory Board Update!
Our Advisory Board has been meeting regularly to determine the feasibility and need of reopening our Preschool or offering a before and/or after school program. Before we take any additional steps, we want to seek the input of our congregation and get YOUR input. Be on the lookout for more updates in our ZUMC February Newsletter!

Opportunities to Serve:

Youth Ministry opportunities. We are most appreciative of Holly Bailey's wonderful leadership with our youth over the last several years. As the Staff/Parish Relations Committee searches for just the right person to be the new ZUMC Youth Director, we would like to invite people in the church to engage with our youth through bimonthly gatherings/events. Of course, these individuals will need to complete Safe Sanctuaries training (including a background check). If you are already trained in Safe Sanctuaries and are up-to-date, please let us know. If you are interested in helping our youth to gather regularly for faith learning, fun and fellowship, please contact Brent Boykin, Lay Leader, at bbpaco19@gmail.com or Pastor Liz at ehounshell@nccumc.org.

Thanks so much for your assistance. Our youth are vital to ZUMC and to this community. We thank God for each one of our youth and for the gifts that they are to us!

Meals on Wheels ZUMC location needs 2 or 3 more volunteers from 10:00am through 12:30pm and you must have transportation. Please call Cynthia (site coordinator) at 919-306-0637.
